Mercedes-Benz India, the India subsidiary of the German luxury automaker Mercedes Benz has commenced the local assembly of the second generation luxury sports utility vehicle GL Class at its Chakan facility. The move by the automaker is expected to enable lower production cost of the car model.
India is the only country where Mercedes-Benz is now assembling the GL Class luxury SUV apart from its plant in Tuscaloosa (USA). The local assembly of the luxury car has enabled a cost reduction of about Rs 5,00,000 on the overall price.
The GL-Class which was launched in the month of May 2013 at Rs 77,50,000 is now available for Rs 72,58,000 (Ex-showroom).
According to Mr. Eberhard Kern Managing Director & CEO of Mercedes-Benz India, the local assembly will also enable easier production availability as well as flexible production scheduling in addition to value addition for the customers.
