Maruti Suzuki India to double production capacity of Celerio

Maruti Suzuki, the largest car manufacturer in India is planning to double the production capacity of the newly launched Celerio small car to 10,000 units per month from the current capacity of 5,000 units. With this move, the carmaker expects to cater to the demand for the new small car in the volume selling segment of the Indian car market.

The carmaker is already in talks with its auto components vendors to ascertain whether the increment in production capacity is feasible and sustainable. The recent discontinuation of the production of Ritz hatchback and the Ritz small car has enabled an availability of 17,000 cars production capacity per month.

Once the capacity expansion is verified from the vendor’s end, the carmaker will proceed ahead to increase the capacity for the Celerio to 10,000 units a month by July 2014.

As reported by industry experts, the carmaker has so far delivered a total of 20,000 units of the Celerio, 52 percent of which are the automatic variant.

The Celerio small car is the first car to be launched with an automatic manual transmission (AMT) enabling cost advantages to the carmaker and a fuel efficiency of 23 kilometers per liter, as claimed by the carmaker.
