Maruti Suzuki delays Gujarat plant plans due to sales slowdown

Maruti Suzuki India, the largest car manufacturer in India has announced that the sluggish sales in the Indian car market have affected its plans for the upcoming Gujarat production facility and the progress has been slowed down accordingly.

The carmaker stated that it will miss the target of commissioning the Gujarat manufacturing plant due to the acute slowdown in the Indian car market. The plans for the plant are expected to be delayed till the end of the fiscal 2015-16, said Mr. R C Bhargava Chairman Maruti Suzuki India.

The Japanese carmaker currently has a capacity to produce 15,00,000 units annually which will be ramped up to 17,50,000 units annually in the month of September 2013 with the commencement of operations at its third plant in Manesar.

Mr. Bhargava added that current fiscal is expected to be a tough year for the Indian automobile market attributing to all time low hit by the Indian rupee.
