Volkswagen Indian discontinues Passat premium sedan

Volkswagen India, the Indian arm of the European automobile major Volkswagen has reportedly stopped the production of the Passat premium sedan for the Indian car market. The reason stated for the halt has been stated to be low demand for the car model.

The carmaker has not been able to sell any units of the Passat sedan in the month November 2013. In the period June to November 2013, the Passat sold a total of 235 units.

It has been reported that Honda Accord sedan by Honda, a competitor the Passat has also been discontinued on the same grounds of low demand. The Passat sedan sold 20 units more that the Accord sedan in the period of June to November 2013.

According to industry experts, the low sales of these car models is due to their high prices owing to which car buyers are more attracted towards luxury car brands such as Mercedes Benz, Audi and BMW which are a notch pricier.

It is expected that the new generation model of the Passat sedan may be introduced in India in 2015 after its global launch.
