Shell India, CII launch initiative to reduce road accidents

The Institute of Quality at the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Shell India signed a joint pact last week to make Indian roads safer. The new initiative, called ‘Safe Fleets’, will promote the adoption of a voluntary code of conduct for road safety. It aims at developing a culture of road safety in the country by formulating and promoting road transportation and safety management standards. Mr Vikram Mehta, Chairman of Shell India, said that the voluntary code of conduct would cover a comprehensive range of issues concerning road safety, and would include developing safety management systems for different businesses and transporters. He added that the project would also help infuse a sense of social responsibility in individuals. Three companies in the country have already implemented the voluntary code of conduct, and 15 more are expected to follow shortly. Transport industry experts say the initiative will not just promote safe driving but also create safe drivers, thereby reducing road accident.
