Maruti Suzuki India is planning to partially dismantle its Gurgaon manufacturing facility once its Gujarat facility is operational. The move is a result of the pressure from the local administration and residents who claim blame the delivery activities to and from the plant for the traffic congestion in the city.
Commenting on the development, M.M. Singh Managing Executive Officer (Production) Maruti Suzuki stated that the company’s move to Gujarat also makes business sense as it would require heavy investment to continue operations at the Gurgaon facility. The machinery and technology at the plant are obsolete and need a complete revamp.
The company is planning to utilize the Gurgaon facility to manufacture engines which will reduce the logistical activities in the area. The current annual production capacity of 7,00,000 units will be minimized to 4,00,000 units with the dismantling of a part of the plant.
