Japanese automaker Nissan is exploring the possibility of launching the electric vehicle Leaf in the Indian market. The company is in the process of determining the feasibility of the launch in the Indian market, states Mr. Kiminobu Tokuyama, MD and CEO, Nissan Motor India.
Nissan has sold more than 21,000 units of Leaf globally in 2011 with the US and Japan being the largest contributors. Indian market has witnessed sow progress in the electric vehicle segment and Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicle (MREV) is currently the only manufacturer of electric vehicles in India.
According to Mr. Tokuyama, the decision to introduce the Leaf electric vehicle will be determined by the government’s initiative to help and encourage the introduction of electric vehicles on a commercially viable basis. He added that infrastructural support by the government is a major requisite for the establishment and growth of this auto segment.
