India’s largest car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki may resume production at its Manesar facility which was locked down due to labor unrest and violence on the facility premises resulting in the death of a manager and injuries to several workers and company executives. Following the violence, the facility was closed down indefinitely subject to adequate preparation of safety and security of the employees.
The final and official decision is yet to be taken by the company. However, production of cars may resume at the facility in phases with simultaneous changes and repair in plant machinery. The abruption of production at the Manesar facility has already cost the company a loss of about Rs 1,400 crore, about 27,000 cars in total for all the non-operational days.
The Manesar plant accounts for about 40 percent of the company’s total production in India and mainly produces the Swift hatchback and the Swift DZire sedan. Both the car models are now out of stock due to disruption of production and have long waiting periods after bookings at dealerships.
