Maruti Suzuki Manesar plant to resume production from August 21, 2012

India’s largest car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki has announced that production will be resumed at its riot stricken Manesar production facility on August 21, 2012. The plant has been closed since July 18, 2012 due to the worker’s strike which turned ugly when violence resulted in a manager’s death and left several others injured. The plant had been shut down by the company due to apprehensions about the safety and security of the employees.

The company will commence production at the plant with 150 cars per day and 300 workers. 500 armed policemen will be deployed in the area to ensure the safety of the employees and the premises. In addition to the police force, the company has also employed its own security force of 100 guards in the area.

After the violence at the facility, the police were to detain about 2,500 workers involved in the riot. While most of the workers fled, the company will have trouble replacing these workers to resume production at full capacity.
