Maruti Suzuki, the largest car manufacturer in India is set to launch a diesel variant of the newly launched Celeria small car for the Indian car market. With the introduction of a diesel version of the small car, the automaker will look to enhance its sales momentum in the fiscal 2014-15.
According to industry experts, the Celeria is expected to be equipped with a 800cc twin-cylinder diesel engine. The carmaker has reportedly developed this engine internally in India unlike the existing 1.3-litre Multijet which is being sourced by the carmaker from the Italian auto manufacturer Fiat. As claimed by the automaker, the new diesel engine will provide a fuel economy of 25 kilometers per liter.
The Celerio small car launched in February 2014 currently holds the badge of the cheapest automatic car in India. The automatic variant of the car model accounts for more than 51 percent of its total sales. With a diesel engine version of the car, the automaker expects the sales to get a boost. It is however yet to be seen whether the new diesel version will be available with automatic transmission.
