Hyundai India and BASF showcase concept car

Hyundai Motor Company in collaboration with BASF (Baden Aniline and Soda Factory) has showcased a concept car called the i-Flow. The concept car has been developed with the aim to showcase new possibilities in automobile manufacturing using input material in a different manner. One of the main goals of the concept was weight reduction which has been achieved by using plastic alternatives instead of metal components.

The seat frame in the concept car, for instance, has been developed using polymers, thermoplastics and recycled material. Moreover, the interior surfaces have been made using a polymer Elastollan which enables resistance to abrasion.

Another possibility that has been displayed in the concept is the engine which has been encased in rigid foam providing insulation and protection as well as retaining the heat from the engine for a better efficiency. The heat from the exhaust is also utilized by thermoelectric converters to power auxiliary systems.

Such utilization of resources and material and technologies like mirror-finish paints and synthetic soft-touch material would enable automobile manufacturers to comply with stringent emissions norms without major redesigning.
