General Motors stop selling Chevrolet cars in India

Major changes are being seen by automobile companies, where the companies are launching new models and the old models are being removed from the market. On the other hand, General Motors India is stop selling its cars in India this year. The company has said in the statement that after 31 December 2017, Chevrolet (the brand of General Motors in India) is discontinuing its sale. After this, nobody will be able to buy these cars after this year.

Company will continue to maintain its service network across key locations in India, to take care of all Chevrolet vehicles for maintenance and repair. GM will continue to honour Chevrolet vehicle warranty as well as Chevrolet’s Roadside Assistance and continue to provide spare parts. The company has said that it will focus only on exports of cars from India. Earlier in April, company had stopped production at its Halol plant in Gujarat. The company stopped production in its first plant under the efforts of integration its manufacturing operations in India. General Motors India has given a statement that, now its entire manufacturing operation will continue from another plant in Maharashtra Talegaon.

General Motors India has been taken this decision after reviewing the company’s performance around the world. The company is also stepping out of four international markets, including Russia, Europe, Africa. According to GM Executive Vice President and President of GM International, Stephen Jacob “Company did not achieved well as expected, also investment does not help to achieve leadership position and gain profits for the long term in the domestic market.

GM began its India journey in 1996, and in 2015 company said that it want to double its market share in India by 2020 to get about 3% or more. At the same time in financial year March 31, company market share fell below 1 percent, which was 1.17% earlier. This decline has registered when India car market grew 9%, demand more than 30 lakh vehicles. In 2016-17 company sales dropped by nearly 21% to 25,823 units, but at the same time exports grew 16% to 83,368 units.

Chevrolet Spark

This Daewoo Matiz platform based small car Spark was projected as a low-maintenance car. The car, however, failed to upstage more popular cars from rivals like the Alto and Hyundai’s Santro.

Chevrolet Beat

Chevrolet’s most popular car is Beat registered 238 units of sales in April 2017 but at the same time this figure was 555 units a year ago. Its sales have declined 57 percent on an annual basis.

Chevrolet Tavera

Most of the Tavera is used in the Cab and tour services. Chevrolet Tavera sold 487 units in April 2017, compared to 871 units during the same month of year ago. There has been a decline of 44 percent.

Chevrolet Cruze

Chevrolet’s luxury car Cruze sold only 68 units in April 2017 while the figure was 97 units in same month in 2016. It recorded 33 percent fall in this year.

Chevrolet Sail Sedan

The company has also fallen by 82 percent in selling Sail Sedan, it sold only 49 units in April 2017, while the figure was 279 units a year ago.

Chevrolet Trailblazer

This Trailblazer SUV registered 41 units in April this year, which were 13 units a year ago. This is a single car which has recorded growth, its sales grew 215 percent.

The other vehicle like Captiva, Sail hatchback and Enjoy also did not well in the Indian car market to reach its goal.
