Ford to export made-in-India engines to foreign auto markets

Ford India is planning to export Indian built engines to foreign automobile markets such as Europe and Thailand with the motive of utilizing its production capacity in India. The company’s production capacity has been under utilized due to slowdown in the Indian auto market and the inability to garner a significant share in the industry in comparison to other companies such as Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai India.

It is estimated that the American car manufacturer will have a manufacturing capacity of 4,50,000 vehicles and 6,00,000 engines by the year 2015. Mr. Gary Johnson Vice-President Manufacturing Asia Pacific and Africa Ford stated that the company will be exporting engines to both Europe as well as Thailand.

Currently, about 40 percent of the engines and 25 percent of the cars being manufactured in India by Ford are exported across 35 countries across the globe. In terms of the domestic sales, the company sold 96,270 vehicles in the Indian market in the year 2011.
