End of a Volkswagen legend – Kombi production to end of 63 years

How many of us would have remembered this iconic Van from Volkswagen? It’s safe to say that almost every car nut, petrol head and gear head would have heard and seen the Volkswagen Kombi before – most notably in movies and cartoons and advertisements.

Well currently Brazil is the only market that manufactures the Van, but due to new regulations that insist all new vehicles must come with ABS systems and driver and passenger airbags, it looks like the Kombi will cease to exist in 2013.

VW makes a total of 251 units everyday at the plant in Brazil, and although the new legislation is only valid in Brazil, it is also its biggest market, so it would not be cost effective to continue manufacture of the old van icon.

The nine-seater Kombi van was first introduced in 1950 and was a huge success in many markets; however 63 years later its design remains the same, but it has reached the end of its product life cycle.
