BMW India, the Indian arm of the German luxury car manufacturer BMW has announced its plans to commence the assembling operations for its 1-Series hatchback model and 7-Series sedan model in India in 2013.
The 1-Series hatchback model will be assembled and introduced in the Indian market by the middle of 2013. The launch and sales for the 7-Series sedan in India will be initiated by the end of the year 2013.
According to Mr. Philipp von Sahr President of BMW India, the company has decided to move in this direction with the motive of maintaining leadership in the Indian luxury car market. The German car company is followed by the Volkswagen Group and Mercedes-Benz brand of luxury cars.
Assembling the car models locally would also enable lower taxes for the carmaker and will also enable volume growth with competitive pricing. The company has been facing economic problems due to low sales of car models and plans to implement a hike in prices across its product portfolio.
Currently, the company assembles the 3-Series and 5-Series sedans in addition to the X1 SUV at its facility near Chennai.
