The Indian luxury car segment which is currently being led by German automaker BMW may soon witness a change in leadership as the carmaker Audi is close at heels of BMW, according to the figures by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).
BMW’s sales in the Indian auto market fell by 12.16 percent to 2,088 units in the April-June 2012 period from 2,377 units in same period in 2011. In comparison, Audi’s sales jumped to 1,908 units in 2012, up 52.15 percent from 1,254 units in the April-June period in 2011. Moreover, in the month of June 2012, Audi reported higher sales than BMW selling 759 units in comparison to BMW’s sales figure of 750 units in the month.
Audi has already taken over Mercedes-Benz to grab the second position in the Indian luxury car segment in the April-June 2012 figures. Mercedes-Benz saw a decline of 24.41 percent in sales from 1,663 units the April-June 2011 period to 1,257 units in same period in 2012.
