Mercedes-Benz India to launch Smart brand with Renault-Nissan support

Mercedes-Benz is planning to call on support from its global partners Renault-Nissan to launch the ‘Smart’ car brand in India. The company has been conducting feasibility studies in India to introduce the Smart brand which includes car models such as the Smart Forfour and the Smart Fortwo.

Being a small car dominated market, India is a logical market to launch the Smart brand, states Dr. Dieter Zetsche Chairman Daimler AG, parent company of Mercedes-Benz. He added that the price for the car models by Smart could lie in the range of Rs 12,00,000-Rs 15,00,000.

Dr. Zetsche also said that the next generation Smart cars are being developed in collaboration with Renault-Nissan and thus Mercedes-Benz may source components and engines from their global partner. The logistics and supposed investments that would enable facilitation of Mercedes-Benz platform and engines are still to be explored.
