After entering the Indian market with six models in the two-wheeler segment early in 2011, German auto major BMW plans to launch under 1,000-cc bike in January 2012.
Navnit Motors’ Managing Director, Mr. Sharad Kachalia stated that the company will launch bikes below 1,000 cc in the domestic market in January 2012. As BMW Motorrad, the motorcycle division of the German auto company, does not have its own dealership network in India, it retails BMW bikes through two dealers located in Mumbai and Delhi to whom these bikes are sent via CBU route from Berlin.
According to Mr. Kachalia, the company wants to cash in on the regular demand for superbikes in India. Mr. Kachalia stated the company had targeted to sell 50 BMW Bikes in the Indian market by the end of 2011, out of which it has sold 39 bikes so far. BMW might need to concentrate on the pricing of its two-wheelers as the superbikes sold by its rivals Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki cost much lesser.
Currently, the company sells BMW K, BMW R, BMW S and BMW K1300S series bikes in India.
