Toyota Kirloskar Motor, the Indian arm of the Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota has halted production at its manufacturing facilities near Bangalore. The decision by the carmaker follows the ongoing labor unrest due to strained salary negotiations with workers.
While the carmaker has not announced the term of the workers lockout, the production has been halted since March 16, 2014.
According to a statement by the Japanese automaker, the workers at the facilities have disrupted and stopped production due to the disagreement over worker salaries between the management, the labor union and the local government.
The carmaker has thus declared a lockout of the production facilities in order to ensure safety of workers and management. A production loss of 700 vehicles per day will have to be borne by the carmaker.
Maruti Suzuki India had a similar situation with its labor union which eventually turned ugly resulting in the death of one of its management personnel.
