The Frankfurt Motor Show 2011

The Frankfurt Motor Show, which is also known as the IAA, got of to a good start this year. With more than 30 new production cars and the same number of concept cars on display. The show had grabbed the automotive world’s attention and here we will look at a few cars that are relevant to the Indian market and the Indian enthusiast alike.

Jaguar C-X16

First up is this concept from the Jaguar stable – the C-X16. This sexy two-seater sports car is actually a hybrid and offers a supercharged V6 petrol engine that can churn out a mighty 375bhp, and using its hybrid boost system this power can be notched up even more.  Charging of the batteries takes place by the regenerative braking system and is stored in the 1.6kWh battery pack. The car can zoom from 0-100kmph in just 4.4 seconds.  The concept is most likely to see a production version very soon, we just hope TATA is learning a thing or two.

Fiat Punto Facelift

The new generation Fiat Punto has gone under the knife and received some exterior treatment.  It features a new front grille and most importantly a longer wheelbase which is sure to be a liked by Indian customers. There will also be two engine variants, a 900cc petrol and a 1.3 MultiJet diesel engine.

VW Up

This much awaited car was also showcased and in various different avatars. The Up will be sold as the Up, Buggy Up, Cross Up, Azzura, eco UP and eUp. The cars will all share the same platform but with different design innovations. The Buggy is a small kit car, the Azzura has no roof and no doors which makes it an outdoor adventure car and the GT version is a beefed up sports version that can get 100bhp out of the regular Up engine. Then there are the eco Up which is a hybrid and the eUp which is purely electric. The Up will be available in Europe next year and will be sure to come to Indian markets as well.

Hyundai i30

This is the car all Indian mid segment buyers will be interested in. the new i30 from Hyundai will have three diesel and three petrol variants with power outputs ranging from 90 to 135bhp. The good thing about all the variants is that all the engines will be very efficient and highly refined. The car also comes stacked with technology and safety features. You might just see one of these cars on display at the Delhi Auto Expo.
