The Tata Nano has been nominated for the ‘World Design Impact’ prize. The award is given by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID), which is a non-profit international organization dedicated to protect and promote industrial designers across 50 nations in the world.
Mr. Pradyumna Vyas, Director of National Institute of Design (NID) and an executive board member of ICSID, stated that two Indian companies, the Tata Nano and the Jaipur Foot, were nominated for the ‘World Design Impact’ prize. While the Tata Nano is promoted as a safe and economical small car for middle class Indians, the Jaipur Foot makes artificial limbs for amputated feet.
The Jaipur Foot was nominated by Tata Exsi-India, and the Tata Nano was nominated by Elephant Design, a design firm started by a group of NID graduates in 1989. The ICSID will formally announce the names of the nominated projects at its general assembly in Taipei on October 27, 2011. The World Design Impact prize winning project would be showcased on 2nd February, 2012 during the WDC Design Gala in Helsinki, Finland.
