Tata Motors to hire 1,650 temporary workers

India’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturer, Tata Motors, is hiring 1,650 temporary workers at its Jamshedpur plant, after laying off over 700 workers last year. The Jamshedpur plant, which is used chiefly for manufacturing heavy commercial vehicles, had to face temporary shut-downs as many as three times in the last quarter. That Tata is hiring again indicates that the company is finally in recovery mode, after a prolonged period of declining sales and profits.

In January, Tata Motors registered the highest sales in three months. The number, however, was 9 per cent lower than sales in January last year (2008).
