Tata Motors may launch Indica Electric in India in 2011

Tata Motors may launch the Indica Electric in India at the same time as it is launched in European markets. The company will start a market study for the car next year, and will launch it in 2011. Tata Motors’ MD, Mr Prakash M Telang, said that the electric Indica’s introduction in India would depend on the cost factor, as it would be an expensive vehicle. Another roadblock for the car could be that electricity is not easily available in India. Telang also said that the car would be suitable for Indian roads.

The electric Indica is being developed by Tata Motors along with a Norwegian company, and is scheduled for launch in Britain, Norway and Denmark in 2011. If the feasibility study in India shows positive results, the car’s Indian launch will coincide with its launch in European markets.

Meanwhile, the production of the Tata Nano is on track. At present, 3,000-4,000 units of the car are being produced on a monthly basis. Trial production at the Sanand plant is expected to begin by the last quarter of FY 2009-10.

  1. The Tata Indica Electric will be welcomed by the public. The Tata Indica is quite a hit, though the petrol version couldn’t attract customers. But the electric version of the Indica will certainly dominate the market as now the Genx is gradually moving to eco-friendly cars.

  2. The Maybe an electric version of the new Indigo Manza and Indica Vista might not be a bad idea… with all the freak features that Manza offers at a delightful price maybe the VFM package will just get bigger !
