Renault-Nissan India to expand production capacity at Chennai plant

The Indian subsidiary of the Renault-Nissan alliance is in the process of expanding its production capacity by one-third of the current capacity at its manufacturing facility at Chennai. The capacity expansion follows the decision to make India a global manufacturing hub.

The joint venture will increase the capacity of the production facility in two phases to 4,80,000 units annually from the current capacity of 3,60,000 units by the end of 2013. According to Mr. Toshihiko Sano Chief Executive and Managing Director Renault Nissan Automotive India, the first line of expansion will be completed in May 2013 while second line of expansion is expected to be completed in the month of August 2013.

The expansion by the global alliance between Nissan and Renault is in line with the upcoming launch of the Datsun brand in the Indian car market in February 2014. Renault-Nissan is also planning to expand its export operations from a joint venture factory in India.
