Peugeot buys the Ambassador brand

Ambassador

This news is very exciting for lovers of the legendary Ambassador. Although the car was put out of production in 2014, it looks like it might make a revival. French car maker Peugeot has just announced that they have bought the brand for just $12 million – capping a spectacular downfall for a vehicle once emblematic of the country’s political class. Hindustan Motors, India’s oldest car maker, stopped production of the Ambassador in 2014 because of high debt and lack of demand for the vehicle, which was designed on Britain’s long-defunct Morris Oxford. Earlier last month, The Birla group had signed a separate agreement with Peugeot to set up two joint ventures with production capacity initially estimated at 100,000 vehicles per year by 2020, but we didn’t think they would have plans to bring back the Ambassador. However, this is great news, and besides the Ambassador, it looks like Peugeot is also all set up to make a comeback to India with its own portfolio.
