Mercedes-Benz plans more compact luxury car models for India

Mercedes-Benz India, the Indian arm of the German luxury automobile manufacturer Mercedes-Benz is planning to introduce more car models in the compact luxury segment. The move by the carmaker is in response to the positive feedback after the launch of compact car models A-Class and B-Class in the Indian luxury car segment.

The new compact car models to be launched in Indian are expected to include a compact sedan and a compact SUV by the year 2014. According to Mr. Eberhard H Kern Managing Director and CEO Mercedes-Benz India, the luxury carmaker expects the compact car models to account for 40 percent of its total sales by the year 2016.

The carmaker has also invested an amount of Rs 250 crore at the Chakan plant near Pune in order to double the assembly capacity at the facility and meet the increasing demand in the Indian luxury car market. Also, the automaker is considering assembling the new luxury compact car models in Indian starting next year 2014.
