Mercedes-Benz India eyes small cities and towns to boost sales

Mercedes-Benz India, the Indian subsidiary of the German luxury automaker Mercedes Benz is considering smaller cities and towns to boost sales and increase its presence in Indian luxury car market. The German carmaker is also in the process of setting up assembly for the latest GL Class SUV at its Pune facility.

By adding the GL Class SUV among its locally assembled models in August 2013, the luxury carmaker will be manufacturing a total of 5 car models locally in India. The automaker has doubled the total annual production out to 20,000 units at the Pune facility with an investment of Rs 850 crore to compete with dominant rivals such as BMW and Audi in the Indian luxury car segment.

The German luxury automaker is also planning to assemble the A Class and the B Class in India subject to the availability of components from the year 2014 onward. Currently these models are being imported from Germany.
