Maruti Suzuki to push sales in the sedan and utility vehicle sector

The country’s largest car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki is looking to boost sales of its sedan and utility vehicle segments. The sales in both segments, especially in that of the Swift Dzire sedan and the Ertiga Life utility vehicle, have helped the automaker maintain the lead in the Indian automobile industry despite economic slowdown since 2011.

The carmaker is planning to revamp some of its car models in its portfolio including utility vehicles such as the Grand Vitara and the mid-size sedan SX4. It expected that the auto manufacturer may launch an SX4 crossover utility vehicle as well as a compact SUV based on its XA Alpha concept by 2014-15. Assembly or localized production of the premium compact SUV Grand Vitara may also be implemented by 2014 for various cost benefits.

Meanwhile, the company is also trying to boost sales in its small car segment which has been losing market since 2011 due to high petrol prices. With low sales in its largest volume selling segment, the company has been dependent majorly on its diesel car segment to maintain sales. However, the automaker plans to launch a new variant of the Alto small car in order to boost sales in the segment and regain the market share in the petrol car segment.
