Maruti Suzuki India’s small car Maruti Alto has become the best-selling car in the world for a second year in a row in 2011. In terms of global sales, competing with the likes of Volkswagen and Fiat in Brazil and Germany, the Alto was the only small car to have crossed the 3,00,000 mark and sold more than 3,10,000 units in India. Volkswagen Gol followed with 2,93,454 units in Brazil and then came in Fiat Uno also in Brazil selling 2,73,537 units. The list of the top selling small cars in the world is majorly composed of cars from Brazil and Alto is the only Indian car to be among the top 5 in the list.
Maruti Suzuki reports that the Alto has registered growth in sales numbers throughout 2011 a year during which the automobile industry faced major sales slowdown in the car market. The company states that even in the wake of new launches and competitors along with cheaper cars available in the industry, the Alto’s sales have been strong and a double digit growth is being expected in 2012.
