Mahindra overtakes Tata Motors to become third largest carmaker in India

Indian manufacturer of utility vehicles Mahindra & Mahindra has taken the third slot in the Indian auto market after Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai India after displacing Tata Motors from the position, according to the figures for the April-June 2012 quarter.

Mahindra & Mahindra has been witnessing significant growth in the Indian auto market with the launch of the XUV 500 SUV. The demand for the new SUV has been a contributing factor to the growth in sales of the company.

The company sold 61,504 units in the April-June 2012 quarter recording a growth of 28 percent in the period over the sales in the same period in 2012. In comparison, Tata Motors posted sales of 60,405 units in the period. Mr. Pravin Shah Chief Executive M&M’s Automotive Division stated that the company expects the demand for utility vehicles to growth and continue during 2012-13.
