Jaguar recalls 18,000 cars in the United Kingdom

A potential problem with cruise control has made the Indian-owned luxury car company Jaguar recall nearly 18,000 X-type models in Britain, stated the company on October 22, 2011.

In a letter sent to the customers, the company warned the cruise control on some 2.2-litre diesel engine in cars manufactured between 2006 to 2010, might not in some circumstances, if engaged, respond to normal inputs and may not disengage in normal manner. Switching off the ignition in that case would disable the cruise control, stated the letter.

Although no accidents or deaths have been reported due to this problem, the company is recalling 17,678 cars in the UK voluntarily. According to a company official, no external customer feedback, but one incident on an employee’s own car prompted the company to take the action to recall the vehicles. Describing it as a “pre-emptive” action, the spokesperson stated the solution to the problem lay in a software update and not a hardware change.
