Hyundai India troubled by labor unrest

Hyundai India, the country’s second largest automobile manufacturer is facing trouble due to the labor unrest at its twin facility at Sriperumbudur near Chennai. The unrest has been initiated by an unrecognized union at the factories and the strike has been declared illegal by the automaker.

The protesting workers at the production facility are demanding the reinstatement of 27 workers who were dismissed by the company in 2008. These employees had been dismissed on grounds of indiscipline. While the union claims that the strike which commenced in the end of October 2012 includes 850 workers and has resulted in a loss of 50 percent production at the twin facility.

The claims have however been rejected by the carmaker which stated that production has been normal despite absence of 200 workers and that it doesn’t intent to reinstate the dismissed employees.
