Hyundai files case against Mahindra Renault in Delhi High Court

Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has filed a case against Mahindra Renault in the Delhi High Court, accusing the latter of using the name ‘Sandero’ for a compact car it is planning to launch, which sounds very similar to Hyundai’s own well-established Santro.  The Korean company is accusing Mahindra Renault is trying to cash in on the popularity of the Santro by using a similar sounding name for a product in the same segment. Meanwhile, Mahindra Renault CEO Mr Nalin Mehta has issued a press release saying that the company has requested the court to remove its name as a defendant as it does not own the Sandero brand, and has no locus stand on it. The brand belongs to Renault. Lately, there has been much speculation on the future of Mahindra and Renault’s joint venture, with Renault CEO even going on record saying that the partnership may end soon.
