General Motors India, the Indian subsidiary of the American automaker General Motors posts 19 percent decline in its sales for the month of December 2013. The carmaker sold a total of 5,705 units in the month in comparison to 7,067 units sold in the same month in 2012.
The major contributor in the carmaker’s sales was the Beat hatchback with 2,073 units followed by the Sail sedan with 1,282 units while the Enjoy multi-purpose vehicle clocked 1,088 units.
Speaking about the same performance for December 2013, Mr. P. Balendran, Vice President, General Motors India stated that the year 2013 has been a challenging duration for the carmaker due to the low economic activity in the auto sector in India. He added that incentives such as discounts failed to boost sales and the low customer footfalls did not pick up.
Mr. Balendran commented about the outlook for the auto industry stating that high inflation and high fuel costs will continue to create challenges for carmakers in the year 2014 unless the government intervenes and provides a stimulus package to revive the industry growth.
