General Motors is the world’s best selling manufacturer

General Motors

We all remember the recall fiasco that Japanese manufacturer Toyota had to undergo last year and how it affected their future sales. After being hailed as the number one car manufacturer, the Japanes giant who taught us all about TQM slipped away to the number three position with German giant Volkswagen reigning the new title – or so they thought.  The figures for 2011 are now in and it looks like the new number one car maker in the world is not the Japanese giant nor the German, it is in fact American manufacturer General Motors who has claimed the most sales in the year 2011 to grab the number one spot. The Americans recorded massive total sales of 9.03 million units in 2011, which is a million more units than Germany’s VW and more than 2 million units over Japanese rivals. The result of the high sales from GM can be credited to its aggressive marketing in markets like India and most importantly China, where cars such as the Chevy Cruze were met with a great response.
