General Motors India postpones venture into LCV space

American automobile major General Motors’s Indian subsidiary General Motors India has postponed its plans to venture into the light commercial vehicle (LCV) space in the Indian car industry. The company had earlier been planning to launch light commercial vehicles including small vans and mini trucks.

The commercial vehicles would have used the N 200 platform sourced from the Chinese partner in the Indian subsidiary Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation’s (SAIC) for developing small vans and a mini truck which would have competed with the likes of the Omni van by Maruti Suzuki India.

The American car manufacturer had planned to produce these LCVs at its manufacturing facility at Halol and had invested heavily in the plant to adapt to the production of LCVs. The commercial vehicles would have been sold under a new brand through a separate dealership network.

It is being speculated that the automaker was not being able to source the appropriate power train for its LCVs. For the time being, the plan to develop LCVs has been postponed till 2015-17.
