European Truck Platooning Challenge 2016

The road transport sector all around the world is in a bit of a problem. With consumer demands constantly increasing there seems to be a lack of proper infrastructure for commercial vehicles and private vehicles use of roads. Of course carbon emissions are also on the increase because of this. During its Presidency of the European Union in 2016, the Netherlands has initiated a European Truck Platooning Challenge. Six brands of automated trucks – DAF Trucks, Daimler Trucks, Iveco, MAN Truck & Bus, Scania and Volvo Group – have been driving in columns (platooning), on public roads from several European cities to the Netherlands.

The aim of the Challenge was to bring platooning one step closer to implementation. Platooning is essentially autonomous trucks communicating with each other and creating mobility. The aim to is to make transport and logistics more efficient without the need to build more roads. Check out this video to get a better understanding of Truck Platooning and its benefits.
