BMW India opens its first dealership in East India

Luxury car manufacturer BMW India opened its dealership facility, OSL Prestige, on the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass in Kolkata on Wednesday. This is the company’s first dealership in the eastern region and has the capacity to display five cars in its 4,300 square foot showroom.

OSL Prestige would serve the entire eastern region and has targeted to sell 50 cars in the current year.

Peter Kronschnabl, president of BMW India, said: “Last year, we sold 1,387 BMW cars in India. This year, our target is 2000 units.” Up to the end of March, 862 were sold in India. “At present, the luxury car market in India has sold about 4,400 units. We want to be the largest in this segment by 2010,” he said. “In India, our closest competitors are Audi, Mercedes, Volvo and Porsche,” Kronschnabl said.

BMW sells the three, five, six and seven series, X3 and X5, and sports cars M3, M5 and M6 in India of which the three and five series varieties are produced in India at the Chennai plant, which commenced production in June 2007. He said seat covers and door panels are obtained locally, while the rest of the parts are imported from Germany. The price range offered by BMW is from Rs 27 lakh to over Rs 1 crore
