Ashok Leyland planning to launch electric vehicles

Making use of the indigenous technology, Ashok Leyland is planning to launch electric variants of its passenger and commercial vehicles, reported BS.

The technology is expected to be developed by Defiance Technologies; a company under the London headquartered Hinduja Group which also owns Ashok Leyland. Mr. V Sumantran, Board Director at Ashok Leyland and Executive Vice Chairman of Hinduja Automotive and Chairman of Nissan Ashok Leyland Powertrain, stated that with the changing trends, there has been an increase in the demand for alternative fuels such as electric and hybrid technologies. He added the company would make use of indigenous technology and produce electric vehicles. The company already has plans to roll out the electric version of the light commercial vehicle Dost in 2013.

Ashok Leyland has an alliance with Yokohama based Nissan to introduce light commercial vehicles. Banking on the premium segment, both Ashok Leyland and its partner are targeting to retail 1,40,000 vehicles by the year 2014.
