Toyota to launch Prius in 2010; may introduce new product to be placed below Innova

Japanese car company, Toyota, will be launching its much talked about hybrid car, the Prius, in India in early 2010. The car will be showcased at the January 2010 Auto Expo, and will be launched soon after. The Prius is equipped with an electric motor powered by a lithium-ion battery pack, as well as a regular petrol engine. It will come to India as a Completely Built Unit (CBU), and may not be available in large numbers. This will be followed by Toyota’s small car in late 2010 or early 2011, which the company hopes will help it achieve its target of a 10 per cent market share by 2015.

Meanwhile, the Japanese company is also considering launching a new product to be positioned just below the Innova. Expected to be a 5-6 seater, the new vehicle will be priced between Rs 6 and 8 lakh. It is likely to be powered by a sub-2.0 litre diesel engine and will be launched within the next two years.
