Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest car manufacturer has posted a decline of 4.4 percent in its total sales for the month of December 2013. The Japanese carmaker sold a total of 90,924 units in the month in comparison to 95,145 units sold in the same month in 2012.
The domestic sales of the carmaker grew by 5.5 percent from 82,073 units in December 2012 to 86,613 units sold in December 2013. The sales of the small car segment including car models such as the M800, the Alto, the WagonR and the A-Star increased by 16.7 percent in the month.
However, the sales of the compact car segment including the Swift, the Ritz and the Estilo fell by 14.7 percent in the month of December 2013. While the compact sedan DZire by the carmaker witnessed a rise of 18 percent in sales, the SX4 sedan sales saw a 17.6 percent decline. The sales in the utility vehicle segment of the carmaker, comprising the Ertiga, the Grand Vitara and the Gypsy declined by 5.5 percent.
The major contributor to the overall sales decline was the exports of the automaker which fell by 67 percent from 13,072 units sold in December 2012 to 4,311 units sold in December 2013.
