Maruti Suzuki India sales decline by 1 percent in January 2013

Maruti Suzuki, the largest car manufacturer in India has witnessed a drop of 1.06 percent in its total sales for the month of January 2013. The carmaker sold a total of 1,14,205 units in the month in comparison to 1,15,433 units sold in January 2012.

The Indian subsidiary of the Japanese carmaker Suzuki sold 1,03,026 units in the domestic market in January 2013 recording a 1.96 percent increase against 1,01,047 units sold in the same month in 2012.

The major contributor to the decline in total sales was the 22.29 decrease in the company’s export figures. The automaker exported 11,179 units in January 2013 in comparison to 14,386 units sold in January 2012. The passenger car sales of Maruti Suzuki in the domestic market witnessed a marginal increase from 88,377 units sold in January 2012 to 88,557 units sold in the month in 2013.

The sales in the company’s mini car segment which includes the M800, the Alto, the A-Star and the WagonR declined by 10.68 percent from 52,036 units in January 2012 to 46,479 units sold in January 2013. Sales in the compact car segment including the Estilo, the Ritz and the Swift hatchback also fell by 6.79 percent in the month.

The Swift DZire sedan saw a rise of 97.52 percent in sales from 8,637 units sold in January 2012 to 17,060 units sold in the month in 2013. The sales of the SX4 mid-size sedan fell by 47.81 percent in January 2013, while the Kizashi luxury sedan didn’t sell any units in the month.

The utility vehicle segment of the company witnessed a 26 fold increase in sales from 231 units sold in January 2012 to 6,095 units in the same month in 2013, mainly attributed to the launch of the Ertiga LUV during the year 2012.
