General Motors India sales fall 26.78 percent in September 2012

American automobile giant General Motors’s Indian subsidiary General Motors India posted a decline of 26.78 percent in its sales for the month of September 2012. The carmaker sold 7,403 units in the month in the Indian auto market in comparison to 10,112 units sold in September 2011.

The September 2012 sales were led by the automaker’s Beat hatchback with 4,539 units followed by the multi-purpose vehicles Tavera with 2,136 units. The Spark small car sold about 254 units while the Cruze premium sedan sold 320 units in the month.

According to Mr. P Balendran Vice President General Motors India, the company’s sales reflect the overall market sluggishness brought about by high fuel prices and high interest rates. He added that the company expects the market to improve towards the festival season in India and car sales to catch up. The festival season is considered in India to be an auspicious time period to buy new products and many carmakers in India are counting for good festival sales.
