Nissan India considers Rs 1,25,000 Datsun car against Tata Nano

The Japanese automaker Nissan is planning to compete against the Tata Nano by Tata Motors by developing a new car under the Datsun brand with a price tag of Rs 1,25,000. If taken up by the company, it would be Nissan’s first venture in developing and manufacturing a low cost car indigenously.

With the Datsun brand of cars, Nissan plans to address the segments in Indian auto market where it doesn’t have a presence including the low cost segment. According to Mr. Carlos Ghosn Chairman and CEO Renault Nissan, the company expects the low cost car to appeal to motorcycle owners who can be converted to first time buyers.

Mr. Ghosn added that the markets such as India, Brazil, Russia and Indonesia witness about 40-50 percent of their sales from segments where Nissan doesn’t have any presence. The company’s Datsun brand is expected to fill in those gaps with car models suitable for those segments.
