Nissan is planning to rope in its luxury car brand Infiniti in order to spearhead its expansion plans regarding its luxury car portfolio in India. The move is coincident with the fact that its rival, the Japanese automaker Toyota is also planning to introduce its premium brand Lexus in India. According to Mr. Andy Palmer VP at Nissan Motor, the plan to expand its luxury car segment in India is part of the company’s global expansion plan since Infiniti is its global brand.
Moreover, the assembly of the luxury car brand will take place in India in contrast to bringing the cars in through as completely built units. Assembling in India will enable competitive pricing because of lower import duty.
Mr. Palmer stated that the Infiniti brand sells around 1,50,000 units globally and the company plans on expanding it to 5,00,000 units.
