Weeks before Mr. Carl-Peter Forster (the former MD&CEO of Tata Motors) quit, he stated it will take another couple of years before the Nano can be taken to the European market.
The former Tata Motors chief stated that it will take about 2 years to reengineer the vehicle before the European entry. According to Mr. Forster, Tata Motors is aiming to become a “solid No. 2” as the gap between Tata Motors (currently at the third spot) and Maruti Suzuki, currently occupying the first place, cannot be bridged soon. Where Maruti Suzuki has nearly 50% market share, Tata Motors on the other hand has close to 15% share. Mr. Froster stated as it would take a very long time to be at number one position, the company wanted to be at solid number two position and make a good international presence.
Mr. Foster also opined that to improve the sales for the domestic market the company needs to increase its number of sales people. According to him at least 1,300-1,800 new sales force should be hired in order to build a sales team for the Nano from the scratch.
