Volkswagen gets global sales crown in first half of 2015

The Volkswagen Group managed to sell 5.04 million vehicles globally in the first half of the year, staying ahead of Japanese car maker Toyota. However, it is a very close race as there was only a 20,000 unit gap between VW and Toyota. While the German sold 5.04 million units, Toyota sold 5.02 million vehicles. However, these figures are actually lower compared to the first half of 2014 as VW’s sales went down by 0.5% and Toyota sold 1.5% fewer units.

General Motors sales dropped by 1.2% to 4.86 million units, giving them third place in the sales race. Last year Toyota came out on top with 10.23 million units, followed by the Volkswagen Group with 10.14 million units and General Motors with 9.92 million vehicles. Toyota has been the best-selling car company in the world since 2012, but it will be tough for them to retain the crown this year.
