In a recent study undertaken by the Oil Ministry, it has been reported that high-end cars and sports utility vehicles in India account for more than 13.15 percent of the diesel consumption. The study was conducted by Nielsen, a global information and measurement company for the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC).
Apart from premium vehicles and SUVs, 8.94 percent of the diesel fuel is accounted for by the commercial vehicles, while three wheelers make up for 6.39 percent of the subsidized fuel consumption.
The largest portion of consumption of diesel is attributed to large commercial vehicles with 28.25 percent. Over all, the transport sector in India consumes about 70 percent of the fuel, while the agricultural tractors and pumps consume 13 percent.
Industrial usage and electricity generators accounted for about 9 percent of the total diesel consumed in the fiscal 2012-13. Mobile towers across the country contribute to 1.54 percent consumption of diesel.
On the other hand, in case of petrol fuel, the study states that out of the total petrol consumption, the transport sector accounts for 99.6 percent. 61.42 percent of petrol consumption is accounted for by two-wheelers while 34.33 percent is consumed by cars. The three-wheelers consume 2.34 percent of the total petrol consumption.
