First Nano, now alternative fuels

Tata seems to be bent on making path-breaking definitions. After having launched Nano, Tata Motors is considering hybrid vehicles, beginning with Indica and spreading out to other passenger and commercial vehicles.

A company official commented, “The company is working on or supporting development of alternate fuels, including bio-fuels, hydrogen etc and also electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles, both for passenger cars and public transport.” The hybrid vehicles, when in the market, are touted to deliver 20 kmpl complying with BS III & IV emission norms.

Tata Motors does not seem to be the only one on the green drive. Mahindra & Mahindra, Toyota and Honda have been readying for the same too. While M&M has decided that all its future vehicles will be laced with hybrid engines, a hybrid version of Bolero is supposed to be in the market in 3-4 months time.

Honda is also introducing hybrid Civic in India by middle of this year and it’ll be priced at an estimated 15-16 lakhs. Said Janeshwar Sen, Senior GM, Honda Siel India, “It is part of our brand strategy to showcase our cutting-edge technology.”
