Indian automobile major Tata Motors has regained its position as the third largest automobile manufacturer in India after Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai Motor. In first quarter April-June of the 2012-13 fiscal, the carmaker had lost the position to Mahindra & Mahindra another Indian automobile manufacturer. However, with a 50 percent growth rate in sales, the automaker has managed to reclaim its position in July 2012.
The company registered a growth of more than 50 percent in its passenger sales for the month of July 2012 selling 26,240 units in comparison to 17,192 units in the month in 2011. The sales for the month were led by the Indica hatchback and Indigo sedan range of car models selling 8,852 units and 6,816 units respectively. The company sold 5,485 units of the Tata Nano mini car and 5,087 units in the utility vehicle segment with car models the Safari, the Aria, the Venture and the Sumo.
The exports of the company in July 2012 declined by 16 percent from 5,771 vehicles in 2011 to 4,864 vehicles. The cumulative sales of the company till July 2012 witnessed a 5 percent growth from 82,300 units in 2011 to 86,679 units in 2012.
